The Sands of Karna!

Image
Today's scenario takes us into the distant past, almost two decades ago! Digging through my copy of "The Best of White Dwarf: Return of the King", I stumbled across a very interesting old scenario, "The Sands of Karna". Asking around my gaming group, my friend Ryan Cu, not to be confused with me, Ryan Ca, offered to take me up to play it out. Warriors of Minas Tirith are rebound for their steadfast bravery in the face of evil, their honour, courage and willingness to do what is right. However, they are men, and we know men are susceptible to the will of evil... A group of warriors from the White City, against advise, have decided to enter the ruined city of Karna. This is not for glory, nor to defend the realm of Gondor, but greed as they go looking for treasure and wealth. The warriors have stumbled across an ancient tower, and convinced that it holds buried treasure in its halls, have entered the towers walls and started to search for anything of value. Locals...

The Streets of Minas Tirith!

Image
Following on from playing The Gate is Breached, Will and I decided to continue our adventure in Gondor and play the next scenario in Gondor at War, The Streets of Minas Tirith. Denethor's madness is starting to take hold in the upper reaches of the city, but the battle rages in the streets. There is still a battle to be fought, and won, following the massacre at the main gate! Pippin has descended through the city and the warriors of Minas Tirith with their brave heroes must stop the horde of orcs overwhelming them before Gandalf can reach Pippin and stop Denethor's madness. Sauron's forces must kill as many men as possible to break their numbers and spirit, reducing them to a quarter of their starting numbers before Gandalf can reach Pippin. The board is set up in a standard 4x4, with the whole gaming area a selection of stone buildings. As we had been playing on a 6x4 table, we decided to push the gate in the unplayable extra 2" to keep theme with the orcs advancing ...

The Gate is Breached!

The Gate is Breached, my first ever scenario!   Orcs are pouring into Minas Tirith, Grond has broken down the gate and showered the courtyard in wood and metal. Will the brave people of Gondor hold out? This scenario is taken straight from the movies, and you can find it in Gondor at War. Mordor has broken down the outer gates of Minas Tirith and rushing into the city, the good side have to hold out for 6 turns and the winner is the side who has the most models within 6" of the centre of the board. There is a slight twist however, if an orc is killed, they can move back on to the battlefield through the gate! To counter this, Gandalf's presence gives the brave warriors of Minas Tirith great courage, they don't have to take any courage tests throughout the game. I played this scenario with my friend Will who was championing the forces of good, with myself the evil hordes of Mordor. We are lucky enough to have a fantastic set of terrain that allowed us to set out the board i...

Welcome to Hunting for Hobbits!

Welcome dear reader! Welcome to the Hunting for Hobbits blog. My name is Ryan, and like many of you, I started my journey within the world of Middle Earth Strategy Battle game with the Battle Games in Middle Earth magazines during the early 00s. After a long break, four years ago I moved to a new area, Huntingdonshire, and decided to try reignite the hobby and find people to play with. I've been very fortunate to since have our local group grow to 19 people, making some great friends along the way. In 2022, I made a conscious effort to track my hobbying, documenting the number of models painted, based and points value associated. This really motivated me to clear a large portion of my backlog, painting almost 120 models and 2500~ points. I finished the year with two new, fully painted armies. This year I plan to do the same, documenting my journey here. However, I also really want to focus on part of the game I have not yet had the pleasure to explore, scenarios. I will be sure to ...
